Mastering Trading Psychology#
Trading is 80% psychology and 20% strategy. Your mindset determines your success more than any indicator.
The Three Enemies of Traders#
1. Fear#
- Fear of losing money โ Not entering valid setups
- Fear of being wrong โ Closing winners too early
- Fear of missing out (FOMO) โ Chasing entries
Solution: Define risk before entry. Accept the loss amount. If stop-loss triggers, it's the cost of doing business.
2. Greed#
- Not booking profits at target
- Over-leveraging positions
- Adding to winning trades without a plan
Solution: Set targets before entry. Book partial profits. Follow the plan.
3. Revenge Trading#
After a loss, immediately entering another trade to "make it back."
Solution: Set a daily loss limit. Walk away after hitting it. Tomorrow is another day.
Building a Trading Mindset#
Think in Probabilities#
- No single trade matters
- Think in sets of 100 trades
- A 60% win rate with 1:2 RR = very profitable
- Process over outcome
The Trading Journal#
Track every trade:
| Field | Why |
|---|---|
| Date & time | Pattern recognition |
| Setup/strategy | What worked, what didn't |
| Entry/exit prices | Execution quality |
| P&L | Track expectancy |
| Emotions | Identify psychological patterns |

Daily Routine#
- Pre-market: Review plan, check levels, calm mind
- During market: Execute plan, don't improvise
- Post-market: Journal trades, review performance
- Weekend: Weekly review, adjust strategy
Cognitive Biases That Hurt Traders#
- Confirmation Bias: Only seeing evidence that supports your position
- Recency Bias: Overweighting recent events
- Sunk Cost Fallacy: Holding losers because you've already lost
- Overconfidence: Increasing size after a winning streak
- Anchoring: Fixating on your entry price instead of current market reality
The 90-90-90 Rule#
90% of traders lose 90% of their capital in 90 days.
How to be in the 10%:
- Master risk management first
- Trade small until consistently profitable
- Keep a detailed journal
- Treat it as a business, not gambling
- Never stop learning
