Instagram Comment Automation#

Turn Instagram comments into DMs automatically. When someone comments a keyword like LINK or YES on your post or reel, ContentLead publicly replies under their comment and slides into their DMs with the link, file, or call-to-action you configured — all within seconds, 24/7.

TL;DR — 60 seconds to live: Connect your Instagram Business account → open any post → click the gear icon → tweak the pre-filled defaults → hit Create automation. Done.

What it does, step-by-step#

When a comment lands on a post you've configured:

1. 💬 User comments "LINK" on your reel ↓ 2. 🗨️ ContentLead posts a public reply under their comment (e.g. "Just sent you a DM 💌") ↓ 3. 🔒 (Optional) If they don't follow you yet, the bot DMs a follow-gate ("Follow me first, then tap the button below to get the link") ↓ 4. 📩 After they follow (or instantly, if follow-gate is off), the real DM is delivered — your message + clickable buttons

This is the core "comment-to-DM" funnel that creators use to:

  • Deliver freebies / lead magnets ("Comment LINK to get the PDF")
  • Drive webinar or workshop sign-ups
  • Send course or product links
  • Funnel comments into 1-on-1 booking calls
  • Grow followers (the optional follow-gate converts comments into followers)

Before you start — prerequisites#

RequirementWhy
Instagram Business or Creator accountInstagram only allows automation on Business / Creator accounts. Personal accounts will be rejected at the OAuth step. How to switch →
A ContentLead accountYou're already here ✓
A few minutesFirst-time setup is 2-3 minutes end-to-end

⚠️ Common gotcha: if your Instagram is still a Personal account, Instagram itself will refuse to authorise ContentLead — you won't even reach the ContentLead screen. Switch to Business or Creator first (it's free and reversible).

Step 1 — Connect your Instagram account#

  1. Open ContentLead → click Instagram Automation in the left sidebar.
  2. You'll land on the Account Management tab. Click Connect via Instagram Login.
  3. Instagram opens — log in with the account you want to automate.
  4. Approve the requested permissions (messages, comments, content publishing). These are required so ContentLead can read incoming comments and send DMs on your behalf.
  5. You'll be redirected back to ContentLead with a green success toast and your account appearing as a "pill" at the top of the page.

You only need to do this once per account. ContentLead stores a 60-day refresh token and auto-subscribes the page to webhooks — you never need to think about either.

💡 You can connect multiple Instagram accounts to the same ContentLead workspace. Each account gets its own pill in the header bar, and configurations are scoped per account.

Step 2 — Pick a post to automate#

  1. Click the Manage Posts view (or click any account pill — it switches automatically).
  2. Posts are fetched on first load. The default is the most recent 5; you can change the number and click Fetch Posts to load more.
  3. Each post shows a card with the thumbnail, caption, and like/view counts.
  4. Look for the gear icon on any post card — that's the entry point to set up automation for that specific post.

💡 Posts that already have an automation configured show a green ✓ CTA badge in the corner. The filter dropdown lets you show only posts with or without automation.

Step 3 — Configure the automation#

Click the gear icon and the Set Up Automation modal opens. It's split into a left editor and a live WhatsApp-style preview on the right that updates as you type.

The form has 4 numbered steps:

This is the message users actually receive in their Instagram inbox.

  • Message — plain text. Keep it short and conversational. Emoji are fine.
  • Action buttons — clickable buttons attached to the DM. Each has a label (e.g. Get the PDF) and a URL. You can add multiple. At least one button is required.

💡 The button URL is what the user actually clicks. Use a tracked / shortened link if you want analytics.

Step 2 — When a comment contains#

This is the trigger. You have two modes:

ModeWhat it doesWhen to use
Specific keywordsOnly triggers if the comment contains one of your keywords (e.g. LINK, YES, info)Most cases. Cleaner inbox.
⚡ Any commentTriggers on every comment on this postLower-funnel posts where you've already filtered the audience

For "Specific keywords" mode, type the word and hit Enter. Add as many as you want. Matching is case-insensitive, so LINK matches link and Link.

⚠️ Use "Any comment" sparingly. If a popular reel gets hundreds of unrelated comments, you'll DM all of them — which can feel spammy and may flag your account.

Step 3 — Reply publicly (toggle)#

When ON, ContentLead also posts a public reply under the user's comment. This serves two purposes: it confirms the DM was sent, and it shows other viewers that the bot is working ("oh, others are getting DMs too").

You can add multiple variations — ContentLead picks one at random per comment so the public replies don't look spammy or templated.

When OFF, only the DM is sent. No public reply.

Step 4 — Require follow (toggle)#

When ON, non-followers receive a "follow-gate" DM first: "Hi {name}! Please follow first, then tap the button below to get the link."

When they follow and tap the button, the real DM is delivered.

When OFF, every triggering commenter gets the DM directly.

💡 The follow-gate is the single biggest growth lever in this feature. It typically converts 30-60% of commenters into new followers. Use the {name} placeholder to personalise the gate message.

Save#

Click Create automation. The modal closes, the post card now shows the green CTA badge, and the bot is live immediately — the next matching comment triggers the flow.

💾 ContentLead remembers your last saved DM, buttons, replies, and follow-gate as defaults for the next post. Configure once, save in 5 seconds for every subsequent post.

How comments are matched (technical details)#

  • Matching is case-insensitive and substring-based. So a keyword link will match comments containing "I want the LINK", "linkk pls", or "send me your link!".
  • Multiple keywords behave as an OR — any one of them triggers the automation.
  • Hashtags and @-mentions in comments are ignored for matching.
  • Each comment triggers the automation at most once per user per post.
  • Comments from your own account (you replying to yourself) are never auto-replied to.

Compliance & limits#

  • Instagram allows you to send promotional DMs only within 24 hours of the user initiating contact (their comment counts as initiation). After 24 hours, you can only send a single follow-up using a "message tag" template.
  • ContentLead stays well within Instagram's published rate limits (200 DMs/hour by default).
  • Don't promise things you can't deliver — Instagram suspends accounts for misleading automation patterns.
  • The follow-gate must give users a way out — never pretend to send a link without delivering after they follow.

FAQ#

Does this work on reels? Yes. Reels, photo posts, and carousels all work. Stories are not supported by Instagram's API yet.

How many automations can I have? Unlimited posts. One automation per post.

Can I set up automation on a post made before I connected ContentLead? Yes — once connected, the gear icon works on any post in your feed.

Will it reply to comments posted before I saved the automation? No. Webhook delivery only fires going forward. Test by commenting yourself after saving.

Can I trigger different DMs based on which keyword the user used? Not yet — one automation = one DM template per post. If you need branching, set up multiple posts each with its own keyword.

Does this cost extra Instagram API quota? No additional cost. ContentLead manages the quota for you, and a 60-day refresh token keeps you connected without re-auth.

Can I see who triggered each automation? The Manage Posts grid shows post-level stats. For per-comment / per-DM logs, see the upcoming Activity tab.

Is my Instagram password stored? Never. ContentLead only stores Instagram's encrypted OAuth token, which you can revoke at any time from Instagram → Settings → Apps and Websites.
